We joined Christian Women's and Christian Men's Job Corps

Imagine enrolling in a job corps program and having your entire life transformed. That's exactly what happens to many who pass through CWJC and CMJC. Program participants receive training in life skills and job readiness, and, along the way, gain self-confidence, purpose, direction, and hope for the future. What a deal!

Naturally, we wanted in on the action. Henry Blackaby said, "Watch to see where God is working and join Him in His work." A generous grant from the Texas Baptist Missions Foundation gave us the resources to collaborate with CWJC/CMJC in its education emphasis. Our goal is to connect leaders and volunteers of the 67 CWJC/CMJC sites across Texas with our upcoming ESL teacher trainings and literacy workshops, and to help in any other way we can.

Becky Ellison of Waco serves as the Texas CWJC/CMJC Consultant. "Reading and writing and being able to function in the work force opens so many doors," she said. "When reading is a challenge, it creates anxiety in putting yourself out there for a job."

Last week Becky included us in her 2016 Leadership Retreat in Glen Rose, an opportunity to soak up the Christian Men's and Women's Job Corps culture and to share some of ours. We already knew that weekly Bible study and solid Christian mentoring help to set CWJC and CMJC apart from other job-readiness programs. At the retreat we met leaders and volunteers who make that happen--servants who love the Lord and are passionate about helping others.

"The best thing about working with CWJC is the people," Becky Adams, Nacogdoches CWJC Program Coordinator said. "Phenomenally great people. Everyone has a story and a goal."

We discussed some of the goals and inducements of those seeking help with literacy, during a couple of retreat sessions. They include: earning a better living, helping children with school work, medical considerations, filling out applications, reading the Bible, and more. We heard success stories, too, which we will joyfully share with you soon.

In the closing session, Reverend Tamiko Jones of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Mansfield, TX, summed up ministry: "We do what God has called us to do, because it's so much bigger than us." She reminded us: "We serve in the power of God."

For those very reasons, we are grateful for CWJC and CMJC, and are honored to serve at their side.
