Since 2010, WMU of Texas has upheld a meaningful tradition of constructing homes in a colonia along the Texas-Mexico border. This initiative is a collaborative effort with the Buckner Family Hope Center, which provides safe housing to families selected and vetted by Buckner International.
What began as a simple vision to offer shelter has grown into a profound opportunity to serve as the hands, feet, and heart of Jesus. Over the years, many families have found salvation as Women’s Build teams selflessly dedicated themselves to their care. The 2025 build continued this legacy, offering its own unique blessings.
A CONSTRUCTION SITE BECOMES HOLY GROUND
The project was a true relay of service. Women’s Build Team One worked tirelessly to complete the home's initial phase while building strong relationships with the family. After a house dedication, they handed the site over to Team Two to finalize the construction.
Team Two quickly realized that God’s plan for their week extended far beyond finishing a beautiful building. Throughout the week, they were given many opportunities to share the Gospel. The entire site felt like holy ground, a place where God’s presence was clearly felt by everyone involved.
HIGHLIGHTS OF ETERNAL IMPACT
The 15th Home Build was marked by several stories of transformation and faith:
A Place of Peace: The new home became a refuge for a young boy in the neighborhood, a friend of the family. Despite living in a difficult environment, he found comfort at the site and accepted Christ during the week.
A Personal Relationship: A Buckner employee, who had previously identified as Catholic but lacked a personal relationship with Jesus, prayed with the build team to receive Christ as his Savior.
Generational Faith: A family friend who helped provide lunch for the workers accepted Christ during the build. Interestingly, her own family had previously received a home built by First Baptist Church of Garland, Texas.
Continued Connection: One young woman who participated in the 2024 build as an unbeliever stayed in contact with a team member through a very difficult year. After facing the loss of her home, car, and job, she made the decision to receive Christ just before this year’s project. She reconnected with the group and joined the team for worship on Sunday.
As the work week came to a close, Team Two spent their final afternoon driving through the surrounding neighborhood to pray. It was evident to all that God was at work in this community.
