Missions Discipleship...A Life-Shaping Experience

by Carolyn Porterfield, Missional Lifestyle Strategist on May 11, 2016 in Blog

She has been in my life for over 20 years. Watching her grow from a girl into a mature young woman has been so much fun. Beautiful, funny, warm, loving, smart and wise are all words that describe my friend. Not having children of my own I feel blessed that her parents invited me into their family. Lots of great conversation happened around the dinner table as we shared together who Jesus is and how He is at work in the world around us.

Kara was introduced to Christ at a very early age. She became more aware of His work around the world through missions discipleship in her teen years. It was on a mission trip where she met her future husband, Brett. Now their journey has taken them to South Africa. Kara shares how her life was shaped by her Acteens’ experiences.

A huge reason that my husband and I are missionaries in South Africa is due to the fact that Acteens laid the foundation for missions in my heart. We prayed for missionaries, we supported missionaries, we learned about missionaries all over the world, and we had missionaries come and speak to us about what it means to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. With every encounter with missions the Holy Spirit was planting seeds in my heart about the importance of saving the lost. I wouldn't have had exposure to missions if it were not for Acteens and would have missed out on giving the children of South Africa a hope and a future.

What about you? How has missions discipleship shaped your life? Share your story and invite others to become a part of a missions discipleship small group.

Who knows? Another “Kara” may hear God’s call to tell the children somewhere in the world about the hope and future they can find in Christ. What if it is you?
