Devotional: Tell the Generations

by Earl Ann Bumpus on January 24, 2021 in Blog

5 For he issued his laws to Jacob;
he gave his instructions to Israel.
He commanded our ancestors
to teach them to their children,
6 so the next generation might know them—
even the children not yet born—
and they in turn will teach their own children.

Psalm 78: 5-6
New Living Translation

With all that has been going on in our world lately, I am reminded of these words of instruction to Christians. It is up to us to help preserve our Christian and family history and pass it on to our children and future generations or truth will be lost.

These words by President Ronald Reagan have been said many times, “Christianity is only one generation away from extinction.” It is our responsibility as Christians to pass on the Good News of our Savior to a lost world, beginning in our own families. We are seeing evidence all around us now that many have not passed down the Good News and the repercussions are devastating...a stubborn and rebellious generation whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to him.” (Psalm 78:8, NIV)

Here are a couple of ways you can preserve your Christian and family history:

  1. My husband and I have recently been going through boxes of “stuff” from past generations of our families. It is amazing to see how much more there is to the story of our heritage than we knew. We have come across old family photos, some without any explanation of who the people. Does this sound familiar? We all need to talk to older family members now to document who these faces are, or they will be lost forever. Listen to the stories, ask questions, take time to find out about your family’s story and share it with the younger members of your family.

  2. Through the centuries, the Gospel has been spread from one person telling another person what the Lord has done. Have you ever thought about making a scrapbook of your spiritual journey? “Faithbooking” tells your story, and even your family members’ story of their Christian journey, and your heritage. Let us not cause a generation to miss out on knowing the Lord because it is up to each one of us!

Tell the Generations….so they will put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds. (Psalm 78:7 NIV)
