Devotional: God Notices

by Earl Ann Bumpus on July 26, 2020 in Blog

Over the past few weeks, a pair of swallows built a small nest in the overhang of our back patio roof in a good, protected spot, out of the wind and hot sun. About a week ago, the eggs hatched with two baby birds in the nest. As the momma bird would come to feed the baby birds, we would hear them chirp and watch them open their beaks to receive food.

Early last Sunday morning when I let our dog, Lilly, outside, I heard her barking an odd bark. I opened the back door, but she didn’t budge. She was on the far side of the patio barking while staring under a chair. One of the baby birds had fallen from the nest and died…and Lilly noticed!

Jesus said, “Even a sparrow does not fall without God’s notice” (Matthew 10:29). As one preacher said last year, “God is a pallbearer at the funeral of every sparrow!”

What a great reminder. God notices each of us when we fall and He values each of us far more than the sparrow. He knows what we are going through and He cares.

God also asks us to pay attention when others “fall.” Many around us are dealing with COVID-19, lost jobs, tight finances, hunger, and loneliness, how can we help? How can we be God’s hands and feet to help them up?

As we notice the needs around us, we can also offer help by giving to the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions®. We don’t have to wait for a specific time to help those in need of Christ across our state. We can help by giving any time during the year, through December 15th. People are worth more than sparrows!
